Who says Math isn’t fun?

March 14th is a pretty important day. Not only was Albert Einstein born on this day, but thanks to the creativity of a physicist named Larry Shaw, it was named Pi Day and became an official US National holiday in 1988. (I learned a lot of these facts on History.com!)

Pi is a mathematical constant that represents a circle's circumference in relation to its diameter. That number is 3.14159265359 ….

Since March is the third month, the 14th day of March (3.14) is the perfect time to celebrate Pi (or Pie!) It was an especially fun day in 2014 when that date (3.14.15) was the first 5 numbers of Pi or π.

To celebrate this special day, I am sharing my favorite recipe for a graham cracker pie crust.

Graham Cracker Crust

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1/4 cup confectioner’s sugar
1/3 cup melted butter
1/8 teaspoon salt (For most pies, I prefer to use a little extra salt, (not quite a 1/4 tsp instead of 1/8), as the slight saltiness of the crust really contrasts nicely with most fillings.)

Method:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  1. Whisk together graham cracker crumbs, confectioner’s sugar, and salt. Add melted butter and combine well.
  2. Pat crumb mixture into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie dish.
  3. Add pie filling.

What is your favorite filling for a graham cracker crust? Will you be eating a slice of pie today?
